One of the hottest fusion rock drummers strutting the planet these days is Virgil Donati. This release showcases his enormous talents. Amazingly enough, all the spectacular, percussive energy and sonic paintings on Just Add Water are spontaneous, unrehearsed jam sessions. Eight cuts of all-out mayhem and wild-cool, fusion abandon are to be experienced within. Being driven along by Donati’s fury is the bluesy-fusey-rockin’-axeman, Scott Henderson. One word needs to be said concerning Henderson’s jamming on this disc -- inspired. This groove Henderson immerses himself in is as good and better than his finest moments on Tribal Tech’s Thick release. Pumping the blood-hot, low-end heartbeat is the fabulous and freakishly good Ricc Fierabracci.(Planet X, Brett Garsed) Hear a new angle of near-perfect grooves and what-it’s-all-about power trio dynamics. The jam winds it up way-tight in climactic fashion building to a fever pitch on the final cut, "How To Grow Great Women." |

1995 release. This is the debut solo performance of the incredible Australian drummer Virgil Donati. Virgil incorporates loops, keys, and breathtaking playing in this drum masterpiece. One for the drummers and a demonstration of how the great Australian drum legend was head and shoulders above the pack - even back then. |

Virgil Donati(drums),Simon Hosford(guitar),Phil Turcio(Keys), Evripides Evripidou(bass)T. J. Helmerich (3 tracks), Brett Garsed (2 tracks), guitar; and Ricc Fierbracci (4 tracks), bass. To label the music of On the Virg, would be downright difficult. While there is an obvious metal feel, the harmonic level of sophistication and complex arrangements elevate this above standard prog/ metal fare. The maturity of the musicians and their sensitive interaction prevent this from being just another technical showcase. The drumming acrobatics of Donati truly make this a recording worth seeking out. His rhythmic abilities are on a par with Dave Weckl, while his footwork will give the speediest thrash metal drummers a fit. If a term was to be used . Jazz-Metal would not be far from the target. After hearing Serious Young Insects, one has to wonder how much higher the bar for technical competency could be raised. |

Visions is Mark Isaacs' latest project for his trio, featuring jazz arrangements of 1960s and 70s popular songs that will make listeners rediscover, ponder and deepen their love for this era. Mark Isaacs says, "Visions features lyrical and dynamic jazz interpretations of classic popular songs from the 1960s and 70s by songwriters such as Lennon/McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Paul Simon and Henry Mancini. Visions is a project that is close to my heart. My approach to arranging and producing these songs has been to respect the original melodies of the great songwriters and to re-imagine them by adding new harmonies, rhythms and colours to further enhance the songs' emotive content." The Visions CD's liner notes feature a substantial piece of creative writing by the Australian novelist and jazz enthusiast Miriam Zolin which she wrote in response to this new CD. |

'Tree' is Kevin Hunt - keys, Steve Hunter - bass, David Jones - drums. Although appearences are rare these days, Tree still turns up at a Festival or club here and there."The debut album from one of the most absorbing bands Sydney has spawned in years. Those who have been mesmerised by their performances will be excited to learn that [they] have committed to disk the same marvellous breadth of music they have revelled in live. The mood swings from serene to cheeky to explosive, and all stops in between. Common denominator is the ravishing,chocolate-sounding bass, the inventive drumming and the quirky, good-humoured and impassioned keyboard playing, including some of the most convincing syth work you’ll hear. This is no conventional jazz piano trio. There is complete equality between the roles of the instruments, allowing these three virtuosi to have open-hearted and enthralling musical chats over their imaginative material."John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald |

AtmaSphere is a Sydney jazz-fusion band specialising in virtuosic performances of their own works. Some tracks have a Zen feel, others are just sheer pleasure rippling from more notes per second than you ever thought possible. In this first CD, AtmaSphere draws you into their supremely musical world of complex rhythms, meditational poetry and ambient textures. The incomparable drumming of AtmaSphere’s leader David Jones propels this exuberant band into all corners of the musical world, which moves with effortless facility through African, Indian, funk and swing rhythms. The music is buoyant, luminous, exhilarating and restful, from the exciting interplay between David and Daryl Pratt (percussion and vibraphone) on Flying through to the exhilarating Dance for Joyful Spirits which springboards into one of David’s melodic drum solos, to the utterly transporting Music at the Speed of Breath with guest Mike Nock adding subtle ethereal piano textures. |
 |
Those fortunate enough to catch AtmaSphere are still talking about their concerts in superlatives. This second release has more focus on spoken word pieces than the first album. The CD takes the listener on a trip through many moods and colours; the music is at times intensely personal, at others virtuosic, and then tranquil; throughout the CD you find style, substance and character. The nine tracks on the album range from 1 minute of silence (Silent Sanctuary) to fifteen minutes (AtmaSuite), in which David’s polyrhymia is well evident. The poetry of Sydney’s Marjorie Pizer (Seasons of the Heart) receives a luscious musical soundscape whilst Inside, the piece inspired by a short Rumi poem, is dramatic and edgy. Carmen Warrington’s ability to vocally match David’s sticking patterns in Rhythm of the Whole Thing is a joy, as is David’s tour de force drum solo. The meditation song Sanctuary is beautifully complemented by Justine Bradley’s angelic backing vocals. |

The onslaught of heavy fusion from Australia continues on this smoking debut cd from drummer Sam Aliano. Anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing the other more famous drummer from down under, Virgil Donati, will be happy to know drummer Sam Aliano has joined with ex-On the Virg members and others to release this 10 song technical fusion masterpiece, very much in the vein of OTV and Donatis' Planet X group. The most impressive thing about this cd (outside the outrageous musicianship) is the quality of the songs, the writing is first rate, as each song never fails to deliver the goods. The group cover a diverse range of original instrumental fusion, latin, jazz, and rock. Simon Hosford, Jack Jones, Robert John Sedky, guitar; Phil Turcio, Arthur Natsis, keys; Marcel Yammouni, guitar, bass, keys; Evripides Evripidou, bass, keys; Sam Aliano, drums; Marcus Francisco, percussion. Visceral, cutting-edge fusion by an Aussie power trio. Commendable chops and crunch aplenty season a fully enjoyable set of original tunes by a band which is sure to make waves in the future.Schipke, Wenham and Dean are equal partners in this aural assault; A slow, charming stroll from Wenham’s bass kicks off "Nina" before an intricate unison melody explodes forth. The bassist walks joyfully in time with Dean’s powerful pounding as Schipke grinds in off-time passion. "Joie de Vie" brings the listener to the edge of his seat with phenomenally speedy high notes and Jaco-quality finger-funk from WenhamThings quiet down on "Slow Glass"and "I Don’t Know"as the players create attractive ballad statements.Schipke’s crystalline offerings are especially inviting, and Wenham vibrantly fronts the latter."Started Out", and "Absolute Mobility" stride the line between jazz fusion and raw metal to excellent effect. The closing tune is uplifting, celebrating the joy to be found in musical creation. |

Dirt is a 4 piece highly talented outfit out of Adelaide led by Guitarist/songwriter David Innocente. This is world class instrumental Rock/Fusion played in effortless unision by 4 very together musicians. All players are in regular demand as session players, and it seems that they shoud have done this much earlier. This is a class effort, with Drummer Thom Mann constantly filling any spaces with well thought out grooves. Bassist Ben Fuller rides the melodies like the wind, and Sax player Chris Soole soars above it all. Innocente unashamedly pays tribute to New York Guitar hero Wayne Krantz in style and composition, and I am sure Wayne will approve of Innocentes tone and feel. After 3 years together these guys are on the money. Amazingly the latest release from Dirt-"One Thing Led To Another "presents something greater combined then the sum of the individuals. - "Dirt - Dynamic Interactive Raucous Tonality" A classic in the making. Reccomended. |

Grant Collins is a musical drummer! - sounds like a contradiction in terms to anyone not a drummer. This CD captures the primal energy of the drums and creates a musical landscape more akin to a vibes or keyboard player. "Primal Instinct"was recorded in one take, no overdubs, no click track, just one man & the largest kit in the southern hemisphere (good job he is sponsored by International drum company - Pearl!)A clinician, player, teacher and composer Grant has travelled the world building up a large following of respected artists such as Terry Bozzio(Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck)Terry says this about Grant "I think he is one of the most promising of the very few young drummers who are also exploring the ostinato based concept of solo drum set playing.Grant's coordination is amazing and something you should experience..He constructs complex rhythmic and melodic orchestrations with all four limbs giving the impression of a whole village of percussionists playing together". |
 |
Listening to Grant Collins" DogBoy you get the feeling that the man has travelled far and wide. There's a definite "world music" vibe and a healthy dollop of history about GC's second solo effort. Seventeen tracks of the most incredible drumming you're likely to hear anywhere! Even more amazing than the actual playing is there are no overdubs on this CD, every track is live and one take! Listen to the CD you will ask yourself; how'd he do that?! Australian drumming magician, Grant Collins manhandles and massages 20+ drums, 20+ cymbals, and 15+ pedals - reported to be the largest working drum setup in the southerne hemisphere. This is not a CD of "look at me - check it out" drum chops and aural tidalwave - this is a emminatly musical and intelligent collection of songs - even the multi-dimensional solos captivate the listener. He plays rudimental snare drum solos on his feet, and then plays 3 part ostinato patterns as a backdrop for one hand soloing.Truly insipration and original. |

Endel Rivers represents more of what seems to be a very impressive list of progressive minded fusion musicians coming from out of Australia. The music is both vibrant and complex, and the musicianship is as good as it gets. One of the performers names may standout to fusion heads, Allan Zavod, who had some lengthy stints with Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Zappa returns to his fusion roots on this CD, with some outstanding keyboard playing, yet he is in good company with the rest of these talent rich players, Glen Roche on Drums and Evan Harris on Bass This CD is all about balance, and each player is highly competent and meet the demands of the various musical challenges presented. Endel Rivers may not be a household name, but this CD chould be one that fusion fans everywhere should look into getting, it really has all the key ingredients that most fans of the genre are looking for. - MJ Brady.
