Visions is Mark Isaacs' latest project for his trio, featuring jazz arrangements of 1960s and 70s popular songs that will make listeners rediscover, ponder and deepen their love for this era. Mark Isaacs says, "Visions features lyrical and dynamic jazz interpretations of classic popular songs from the 1960s and 70s by songwriters such as Lennon/McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Paul Simon and Henry Mancini. Visions is a project that is close to my heart. My approach to arranging and producing these songs has been to respect the original melodies of the great songwriters and to re-imagine them by adding new harmonies, rhythms and colours to further enhance the songs' emotive content." The Visions CD's liner notes feature a substantial piece of creative writing by the Australian novelist and jazz enthusiast Miriam Zolin which she wrote in response to this new CD. |

Vorticity Music proudly announce the release of Logic?'s second album 'The Waiting Game'. This new release showcases the ensemble's diverse musical influences, and their evolving group concept. Whilst maintaining a focus on developing a fresh, contemporary sound, the group also prides itself on preserving the spontaneous and interactive approach of the jazz tradition. The 7 tracks presented on 'The Waiting Game' represent a variety of different styles, and contrast from compositions based on complex rhythmic & harmonic patterns, to simple grooves. 6 of the tracks are originals, with the only cover being an extended arrangement of the Dizzy Gillespie classic, 'A Night in Tunisia'.The recording sees the addition of Craig Schneider (keyboards) and Dave Newdick (trumpet) to the line up. This expanded framework brings a new range of textures and timbres to the group's arsenal.' This is an fantastic CD and defintly in the running for one of the years best releases. |

Max Stowers is one of the most in demand bass players in Aotearoa (New Zealand), his latest gigs holding together the rhythm sections for Nathan Haines NZ band. This debut solo effort "Malaga" is a collection of 10 originals integrating jazz, funk, Latin and Hip Hop with a Polynesian vibe. " Pacific JazzFunk " Featuring the bass as a melodic and solo instrument. An instrumental album, with the exception of two vocal tracks, featuring two basses, one keeping the groove, the other playing melody lines. If you're into bass you will dig this album, it's rhythmic and almost electric/ethnic. If not you will still enjoy the groove-based musicality of it - this is not just another "my fastest licks" album. Blending the rythmes and soul of the south pacific with the nuances of jazz and funk, this album well and truly blurs the line. If you like the tone and technique of Jaco, and love the feel of Marcus Miller, chances are that you will love this album!..Highly reccomended. |

The music on this CD documents the culmination of a journey that began when Jyrki Kangas, artistic director of Finland’s Pori International Jazz Festival, asked Mark to put a trio together to perform at the Festival. Collaborating with Jay Anderson on Bass and Adam Nussbaum on Drums the trio captured the imagination of Adrian Jackson at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and this CD was a recording of the final show performed at "The Basement" in Sydney Australia. The CD is a performance of 5 standards - Skylark, Gone With The Wind, Wayne Shorters - Footprints, Falling in Love Again and a beautiful interpretation of Leonard Bernstein's - Somewhere. |

2003 release - Project 3 are Simon Patterson on Drums, Craig Newman on Bass and Gerry Pantazis on Drums. This Melbourne based trio have produced an album of instrumental Gems. The songs are written by all members of the band and like brothers they have a familiarity but with a unique voice of their own. Tinged with blues, world and funk influences the sound is very international (helped in part by the mastering of world renowned Scott Hull). Outrageously talented Project 3 has delivered a technically excellent, melodically lifting and eminently enjoyable CD. Will be loved by technophiles and music lovers everywhere. |

Steve Smith - drums, Andy Fusco - alto sax, Steve Marcus - tenor and soprano saxes, Mark Soskin - piano, Baron Browne - electric bass. Recorded Live at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London June 7 and 8, 2002 Very Live at Ronnie Scott’s - Set Two delivers more of the same high octane playing that made Set One so much fun. Recorded the same week as Set One, drummer Smith, Buddy Rich alumni tenor/soprano saxophonist Steve Marcus and alto sax man Andy Fusco are joined by Vital Information/Steps Ahead bassist Baron Browne and pianist/arranger Mark Soskin, who has played with artists including Bill Cobham to Sonny Rollins. Once again the set features crisp arrangements of material from the Rich book, as well as some new tunes. The horn lines twist and weave in ways that imply a larger horn section and the overall feeling is bright and outgoing. Impeccably recorded examples of contemporary mainstream jazz that pay homage to Rich yet have something fresh to say. |

Listening to Grant Collins" DogBoy you get the feeling that the man has travelled far and wide. There's a definite "world music" vibe and a healthy dollop of history about GC's second solo effort. Seventeen tracks of the most incredible drumming you're likely to hear anywhere! Even more amazing than the actual playing is there are no overdubs on this CD, every track is live and one take! Listen to the CD you will ask yourself; how'd he do that?! Australian drumming magician, Grant Collins manhandles and massages 20+ drums, 20+ cymbals, and 15+ pedals - reported to be the largest working drum setup in the southerne hemisphere. This is not a CD of "look at me - check it out" drum chops and aural tidalwave - this is a emminatly musical and intelligent collection of songs - even the multi-dimensional solos captivate the listener. He plays rudimental snare drum solos on his feet, and then plays 3 part ostinato patterns as a backdrop for one hand soloing.Truly insipration and original. |

Planet X and Dream Theater to Alice Cooper and Kiss, Derek Sherinian has played with many of rock’s premiere talents over the course of his prolific career. His third solo album, Black Utopia, Derek assembled an all-star roster that sets a new standard for virtuosity. Sherinian recruited the likes of Zakk Wylde and Yngwie Malmsteen to not only perform on the same album, but to trade licks on the same song. Add Steve Lukather and Al DiMeola to the mix, and the result is a recording described by BW&BK as "a guitar lover’s wet dream" .There’s an ample supporting cast, featuring a formidable rhythm section composed of drum legend Simon Phillips (Toto, Jeff Beck) bassist Tony Franklin (Blue Murder, The Firm), in addition to guest stars such as ex-Mr. Big/current Steve Vai bassist Billy Sheehan and violinist Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra). Don’t forget Sherinian, his keyboards range from aggressive to atmospheric while enhancing each of the album’s nine tracks. |

Dirt is a 4 piece highly talented outfit out of Adelaide led by Guitarist/songwriter David Innocente.T his is world class instrumental Rock/Fusion played in effortless unision by 4 very together musicians. All players are in regular demand as session players, and it seems that they shoud have done this much earlier. This is a class effort, with Drummer Thom Mann constantly filling any spaces with well thought out grooves. Bassist Ben Fuller rides the melodies like the wind, and Sax player Chris Soole soars above it all. Innocente unashamedly pays tribute to New York Guitar hero Wayne Krantz in style and composition, and I am sure Wayne will approve of Innocentes tone and feel. After 3 years together these guys are on the money. Amazingly the latest release from Dirt-"One Thing Led To Another "presents something greater combined then the sum of the individuals. - "Dirt - Dynamic Interactive Raucous Tonality" A classic in the making. Reccomended. | |
